FAQ
Q: What’s this site about?
A: This site is dedicated to the adventure game series „The Far Corners of the World“ (short FCotW). Currently the first game of the series has been released and chapter 2 is in the works. The series is developed with the awesome AGS (Adventure Game Studio), which is freely available at www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk. On this site you'll find semi-regular updates about my progress with developing these games, you can download the games themselves and discuss them in a forum. In the future, you may also find reviews of other (adventure) games, movies etc. here.
Q: Who are you anyway?
A: I am a professional software developer who uses parts of his sparse free time for developing adventure games. After all I've been a huge fan of classic point & click adventure games since the days of Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken. Although FCtoW Chapter 1 is my first real game, I had some practical experience with AGS before: from 2008 to 2010 I held various adventure game design and programming workshops for Austrian pupils and teachers. You may know me as Wesray from the AGS forums and I'm also on twitter under the alias wbentoch.
Q: What are your influences?
A: Since I’ve played many great AGS games (most of them freely available at the AGS game database) I figured I should try my hands on developing an epic AGS adventure game myself. The great Ben Jordan series by Grundislav in particular inspired me to start my own project. Among my main influences from commercial games are Zak McKracken, Monkey Island 1 & 2, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and the awesome Gabriel Knight series.
Q: Tell me more about this FCotW series then.
A: I'm a sucker for storytelling in all kind of media, so this is also where the focus of FCotW lies on. The story of the series has been meticulously planned and spans five games. Since it is an ongoing story, it is recommended to play the games in sequence, though it SHOULD be possible to play them as stand-alone games too, although you'll naturally miss a lot in that case. Gameplaywise, you'll solve puzzles, lots of them! I hate games one can simply walk through without being challenged. However my goal is for all puzzles to be fair and logical and the player's power of observation should play an important part in the game. From the technical point of view, FCotW fully embraces its retro roots with a classic 320x200 resolution and backgrounds exclusively drawn in MS Paint. If that isn’t your cup of tea, well, you should try out the games anyway. ;) They are free to download and play after all!
Q: When will the next game be released?
A: When it’s done it’s done! FCotW1 took me two years to complete and I’ve learned my lesson that everything takes longer than expected. But I'm working on it whenever I can, and eventually it will be done. Currently I expect to release FCotW2 in mid-to-end 2013.
Q: Can I help you with developing the games?
A: Well, I try to do as much as possible on my own. But by all means contact me with details about what you have in mind!
